Panel Bonding with TEROSON® EP 5055

Panel Bonding with TEROSON® EP 5055

What is TEROSON® EP 5055?

TEROSON® EP 5055 is an OEM approved, solvent-free, high-strength epoxy panel bonder. It protects bare steel, zinc-coated steel, and aluminium alloys from corrosion while enhancing body stiffness, NVH properties, and vehicle longevity for improved driving. Easy to prepare and apply.

EP 5055 adheres to a wide range of materials (without primer) including aluminium, steel, and sheet moulding components. Particularly ideal for roof and panel bonding. Spot-weldable, so long as the material is not yet solidified.

The mixed compound is made up of a black (part A) and gray-green (part B) with a ~80-minute processing time (23°C, 50% rh). Reaches its initial strength (0,1MPa) in ~7h at 23°C. Full cure occurs at room temperature in 48 hours; curing can be accelerated via infrared heat at 60°C for 1 hour or 80°C for 30 minutes.

How to apply TEROSON® EP 505

For application, use a pneumatic or manual dual cartridge dispenser.

Step 1: Prepare Surface

Use a sander to remove old adhesive from existing body parts to make sure they are back to bare metal and free of any contamination.

Step 2: Clean Surface

Clean surfaces to be bonded with TEROSON® VR10 and a lint-free cloth. Surfaces must be free of oil, grease, dust, or any other contaminant.

Step 3: Pretreat Surface

Both bonding surfaces must be cleaned again to remove grinding dust. Repeat step 2 and allow the prepared surfaces to dry for approximately 5 minutes.

Step 4: Prepare Cartridge

Remove the cap from the TEROSON® EP 5055 cartridge and insert it into the application dispenser. Before attaching the static mixer to the cartridge, dispense a small amount of material until both adhesive components run equally. This is necessary to achieve a good mix of the two components.

Notes: Ensure to use the correct static mixer, otherwise the product won’t cure properly.

Step 5: Prepare Adhesive

When mixed, TEROSON® EP 5055 is very dark grey in colour (almost black). Discard first 5 cm of adhesive.

Step 6: Apply and Spread

Apply and spread TEROSON® EP 5055 with a spreader or brush. All bare metal areas should be covered with adhesive for corrosion protection. TEROSON® EP 5055 can be used on steel and aluminium panels and as part of the preparation. With new panels, the ‘e coat’ must be removed from the bonded area and adhesive applied and spread to cover the bare metal.

Open time for mixed adhesive (at normal room temperature of 23°C) is approximately 60 minutes. It may be necessary to change the static mixer if no material has been passed through it in over 30 minutes.

Step 7: Assemble Components

Join and fix components within the 60 minutes processing time. If spot welding is required, it must be carried out during this initial period. Do not subject bonded parts to stress before final cure.

Remove excess adhesive immediately with a spatula or cloth and TEROSON® VR10. Cured adhesive can only be removed mechanically.

Step 8: Cure

During the curing phase, avoid movement or stress until the product is fully cured.

The adhesive cures at room temperature. (Initial strength approx. 4 hours at 23°C; final strength approx. 48 hours at 23°C). Curing time can be accelerated using common tools like infrared or heating pads. (60 minutes at 60°C or 30 minutes at 80°C).

Step 9: Painting

When initial bond strength has been reached, bonded parts can be painted.

Step 10: Disposal

Cured product and empty cartridges are disposed of as normal waste. Uncured material has to be disposed of as hazardous waste. (See Safety Data Sheet for more details.)
